Kitchen Ware Choices

Kitchen Ware Choices for You

The words “kitchen ware” is somewhat confusing. For some, it means specific aspects of the kitchen and for other people, anything used for cooking. The truth is that kitchen ware does in fact include dishes, cookware, appliances, and other things found in a kitchen used to cook. Therefore, the term “kitchen ware” is quite broad. With this, you could lump your pots and pans, everyday dishes, eating utensils, measuring cup, and rolling pin into one category.

However, kitchen ware also includes a number of things that you might use only on occasion. For example, a basting brush is often used when baking pies, breads, or meats. With this brush, you would use an ingredient to “baste” the food, making it savory and delicious. For chicken on the grill, a basting brush could be used for applying your favorite barbecue sauce. However, if baking a pie, the basting brush could be used for lightly brushing on egg white to give the piecrust a shiny appearance.

Another type of kitchen ware is the candy thermometer. True, not everyone makes candy but if you happen to be someone who does, or perhaps you are interested in learning how to make candy, this type of special thermostat is a “must have”. Sometimes, this kitchen ware will also be referred to as a sugar thermometer. In either case, the instrument is used for determining the temperature of a stage when cooking something with sugar.

Although a candy thermometer may look like one used on meat, they are different in that a candy thermometer reads higher temperatures. Let us say you wanted to make peanut brittle or fudge. These two candies are very different, each needing to reach a specific temperature to be successful. With this type of kitchen ware, you can use the display to make sure the candy reaches the appropriate stage for perfect candy every time.

Kitchen ware would also include cheese cloth, something our mothers and grandmothers likely used more.  However, a number dishes would be made using cheesecloth. This woven cotton cloth is lightly woven and available in seven grades. For instance, you might go with an open weave to something extra fine. Each of these grades is determined by the amount of threads per inch going in each direction. One example of what cheesecloth would be used for is fruitcake, a popular holiday dessert.

Even your favorite frying pan would be considered kitchen ware. Regardless of the style, size, or material of your skillet, they are all “kitchen ware”. In other words, if you have a stainless steel pan or cast iron skillet, both would be considered kitchen ware. Cookware and baking dishes are the same. Falling within the kitchen ware category, you would have muffin tins, bread pans, cake pans, casserole dishes, pie pans, and so on.
