Unfortunately, when most people think of metal kitchen cabinets, they envision something old and out of style. While some homes do have old metal kitchen cabinets that leave much to be desired, today you actually find new styles of metal cabinets that are gorgeous. Typically, metal kitchen cabinets are used in contemporary style kitchens although with the new designs available, they work with virtually any kitchen decorum.
Keep in mind that if you want to have new metal kitchen cabinets installed, you certainly could but if you already have metal cabinets that just do not look good, rather than spend the money for new cabinets, you might consider painting them. As long as the cabinets themselves are in good condition, you would be amazed at what the right paint job can do. The most important thing to remember when painting metal kitchen cabinets is that you need to lightly, coat the cabinets with spray paint just once. Then, once the paint is fully dried, go back over the cabinets a second time, again spraying only a light coat. The most common mistake made when painting metal kitchen cabinets is trying to cover the cabinets in one coat. Unfortunately, this method simply does not work, resulting in a thick, runny mess. While the cabinet doors should be removed and taken outside, you may need to cover the walls, floors, countertops, and anything else in sight with protective paper for the body of the metal kitchen cabinets. Of course, because you are working with paint, we suggest you have the pilot light off a gas stove and make sure the windows and doors are open for ventilation. In addition, instead of using just any type of spray paint found leftover in the garage, you need to make sure you use paint intended for metal, specifically paint with no fumes. If you want a clean, crisp look for your metal kitchen cabinets, you could always go with a light cream, gray, or even white. To add a splash of color or character, consider painting a thin line around the edges in a bold color or changing out the old hardware to an antique nickel or pewter. If you want a country look, then once the metal kitchen cabinets are completely dry, you could also stencil on flowers or designs. Now, if you want to make your metal kitchen cabinets pop, then go with color. For instance, a traditional or contemporary kitchen would look great with red, blue, or green cabinets. Coupled with white walls, the cabinets would look fresh and vibrant. Again, if you want to be more creative, you can always add a second, coordinating color or use interesting hardware and knobs. As you can see, even old metal cabinets can be revived. Of course, if you want something new, you will find a wide array of choices now available. Many come with beautiful designs, textures, or even inserts such as glass or mesh. Therefore, when you get ready to update your kitchen, in addition to the traditional wood, we also suggest you look at metal kitchen cabinets. |
