Paint Is a Cheap Way to Update Kitchen Cabinets

Tired of your kitchen cabinet style, but don’t have the money to redo your kitchen? Then consider these options: kitchen cabinet refacing, painting your kitchen cabinets and/or installing new hardware.

Kitchen cabinet refacing is the most cost-effective option for completely transforming an outdated kitchen. It involves removing and throwing away the hardware and kitchen cabinet doors, but keeping the base units themselves. Companies that specialize in this then install new door fronts, drawers, trim and veneers so that the old bases match the new finish and style. Another bonus for kitchen cabinet refacing is that your kitchen remains useable and functional at all times – as opposed to a complete kitchen remodel.

Another option for updating your kitchen cabinets is to consider painting them. For the cost of paint and supplies, usually less than a couple hundred dollars, you can completely transform the look of your kitchen cabinets, especially if you consider repainting the walls as well as for an updated look.

And of course, last but not least, if you want to change the look of your kitchen cabinets consider installing new hardware. Plain white door fronts can go from modern to funky with the addition of stone knobs. Or, transform your kitchen into a county paradise with old-fashioned porcelain handles. When coupled with new paint or refaced kitchen cabinets you will end up with a brand new look without breaking the budget.

If you know that you want to make one or more of these changes to your kitchen but aren’t sure what style would look best in your space, consider touring your local kitchen design showroom. You will be able to view a number of kitchen cabinet styles and finishes. Another, source of great ideas are design books that you can buy at the bookstore or check out from the library. Often these guides provide how to information for a specific look, and or make color recommendations for certain styles. This will help you to avoid costly mistakes.

But above all, when deciding on a new kitchen cabinet look, take your time. Ask for samples from a company that refaces cabinets and set them in your kitchen for a while. Or, consider painting one or two of your kitchen cabinet doors in your favorite colors to see how they look in different lights. And, with the wide spread availability of tester pots of paint, you don’t have to commit to buying a quart or gallon of different paints that you may not like once they’re on your kitchen cabinet.

So remember, there is no reason to have to live with a cabinet style you hate. Simply identify what your budget and target look are, and go for it! Because when it comes down to it, our homes are a reflection of our style and our personality and your kitchen and kitchen cabinets should reflect you.
