Kitchen Flooring and the Choice for You

One of the best ways to update your home while adding serious value is with the right type of kitchen flooring. With the kitchen being the heart of the home, the one room that sees more traffic than any other you want to start from the floor up when updating. Something as simple as changing out the floor can completely transform your drab kitchen into a stunning room with warmth and character. As you will discover in this article, your options for kitchen flooring are quite varied, each with pros and cons.

Vinyl

Of all types of kitchen flooring, vinyl is the most common. The greatest benefit to vinyl is the high level or resilience, which is perfect for busy families with small children and pets. Vinyl is made in tile or sheet form and available in a huge selection of patterns and colors. Some of your choices include inlaid or standard. With inlaid, the pattern and color penetrate all the way through the material whereas with standard vinyl, the pattern and color are only printed on the first sheet, which is then covered with a clear upper surface and foamy core.

Kitchen flooring made from vinyl looks beautiful and wears well. You can choose from a no wax coating or polyvinyl chloride surface. In addition, when choosing, you want to actually stand or walk around on the vinyl to see how it feels underneath the feet.

Vinyl kitchen flooring means you never have to worry about any discoloration and other than a good sweeping and mopping, there is little to no maintenance. Additionally, vinyl is an excellent material for resisting stains and scuffmarks. The downside to this type of kitchen flooring is that you need to clean up spills quickly to avoid stains. Then, installation must be done properly for appearance and functionality.

Laminate

This type of kitchen flooring is also a popular choice that looks much like stone or hardwood but with easier maintenance and a lower price tag. Laminate flooring is adhered to fiberboard or particleboard. The benefits to laminate flooring include no damage from spilled drinks, you never have to worry about fading or stains for at least 10 years, laminate is highly durable, holds up well under a lot of traffic, and requires little maintenance. The only thing to keep in mind is that should water seep in between seams, the layers can begin to break. Finally, if the floor experiences damage, the entire floor would have to be replaced.

Stone

One of the most beautiful choices for kitchen flooring is natural stone. Included in this category include marble, granite, and slate. One of the greatest pros of this material is the durability and strength. The only things to remember is that stone can be cold to the touch, to avoid stains, the floor would need to be sealed from time to time, and this type of kitchen flooring, especially marble, can be very slippery when wet.
