Kitchen Layout: Creating a Sense of Style and Space

Space is always at a premium in the modern housing market. No matter where you are living and what type of home you live in, almost everyone will say that they could do with some extra space. Space is also the key factor in determining the cost of housing and in many areas, housing will be completely priced depending on square footage. At the same time, regardless of how much space you have available, you will always want to make your home and especially your kitchen look as stylish as possible. Well if you would like to achieve both of these objectives, then you really have to pay a lot of attention to kitchen layout.

There are many different kitchen layout philosophies but all of them concentrate on making the best possible use of the space available while giving the best looking effect possible. The layout that you choose for your home will also depend on the shape of your kitchen. Below are a described a number of most common and practical layouts that you may wish to consider.

The first is the wall kitchen layout. This is when you need to fit your entire kitchen along a single wall. You will usually have your sink in the middle of the wall and then you can have your refrigerator on one end and your stove on the other. Your dishwasher should be between the refrigerator and the sink. This will give you the best layout for the space.

The second kitchen layout is the corridor. This is for when you can place the elements of your kitchen on opposing walls. One wall will have your stove. The other wall will have your sink, dishwasher and refrigerator, with the dishwasher in the middle. This means that you will have easy access to everything from the stove, especially the refrigerator.

The third type of layout is the L shape. This is when you have two joining walls and a corner to work with. Similar to the corridor kitchen layout, the L will have your stove on one wall, with the other wall being arranged so that closest to the stove is the dishwasher. This is followed working outwards by the sink, dishwasher and refrigerator.

The reason the refrigerator is always far from the stove is that the heat from the stove can effect the functioning of the refrigerator. The kitchen layout plans will also usually try to keep most appliances away from the stove for safety reasons. There are really an unlimited number of layouts available and many plans now incorporate things like islands and breakfast bars which give you many more kitchen layout options.
