Kitchen Renovation: Helpful Tips

With the kitchen being one of the most important rooms of the home, planning just about any kitchen renovation project would be beneficial. If you stop to think about the amount of traffic, as well as all the uses this one room of the house alone gets, it is amazing. The truth is that the kitchen has been known as the “hub” of the home for a long time. Today, it remains the number one important room so you want it to be beautiful, functional, and practical.

You could get involved with any number of kitchen renovation projects, ranging from new cabinet hardware to a sink to brand new flooring. Whether looking at a small or large kitchen renovation project, the results will make this room even more homey and comfortable. However, regardless of the item or items you decide to tackle, there are some helpful tips that can make the process easier and more successful.

For starters, always use high quality materials. Even if this means adding new pulls to cabinet drawers, you want to go with quality. In fact, quality of materials is so important that it would be better to put a project on hold for a few weeks or months until you could afford to buy the best. In addition to looking better, the higher quality material will last longer. Just remember one thing – to buy top quality materials does not always mean more money. Therefore, keep your eyes open for bargains.

Another important tip for kitchen renovations has to do with the height of the cabinets. For example, since the kitchen cabinets are a huge visual and selling point in a kitchen, you need to choose wisely. If your kitchen ceilings are eight-foot, the standard for most homes, then your kitchen cabinets should be designed to go all the way to the ceiling. This way, you would benefit from better storage, as well as end up with more wall space. Now, if you are one of the fortunate ones with 10-foot ceilings or more, then we recommend 15 to 17 inches be left above the cabinet space.

For your kitchen countertops, these should be both beautiful and functional. The countertops are yet another major part of a kitchen renovation so to dress things up a bit, think elegant. In other words, many people will stay within the safe zone, choosing only neutral colors. While this is certainly an acceptable option, now might be the time to do something different. Using limestone, slate, or soapstone are all gorgeous solutions.

Then, if you have the space and appropriate configuration, you might consider installing a kitchen island. For this, you could have an island installed that is permanent to include ceramic or marble top, built-in sink, prep space, and so on. However, kitchen renovations can also be accomplished beautifully by purchasing a pre-made island at your local home improvement store.  Finally, be careful when working on details. Sure, you want some details that show color, various patterns, and most importantly, your personal style. On the other hand, a kitchen renovation can also be overdone, making the room appear overcrowded and gaudy.
