There are a lot of trends and fashions that go through the interior design world, but one trend that really has been taking root and lasting, is the idea of the retro kitchen. This is part of a greater all round trend in all things retro, from cars to clothing, but it is proving to be one that is working for an awful lot of people, from the ultra chic, to just those who are looking for something a little bit more exciting and interesting in their home. It looks like the retro kitchen is back and is back to stay.
Everyone has seen the photos in old fashion and design magazines of those kitchens in the 60s and 70s that were supposedly ultra modern. Many of these photos also include the then idea of the ideal family, with the man dressed in a suit going to work and the pretty wife with a smile on her face getting the children’s lunch ready for school. It is perhaps nostalgia for this ideal of family life that is fueling the current popularity in the retro kitchen but there are other factors as well. For one thing, the appliances that you need to create the look of a retro kitchen are becoming increasingly cheap and readily available. Almost all major appliances are now available in a retro look from a leading electronics manufacturer. While these new appliances utilize all the conveniences and efficiency of newer appliances, they retain the look, feel and simple functionality of the older appliances. These appliances are fairly easy to find and while they will probably cost more than some of the cheaper models you could find, they certainly shouldn’t end up breaking the bank. You can get retro kettles, toasters, refrigerators and a lot of other appliances that will start you off on achieving your retro look. As well as getting the appliances, there are other simple steps you can take to create an authentic feeling retro kitchen. First of all, look at patterns. Bold patters such as colorful strips and big polka dots fit well with a retro look and if you can find kitchen curtains or wall tiles or floor tiles that have any of these patterns your style will become perfect for a retro kitchen. Furniture is also an important element in obtaining the look and feel of a retro kitchen. The plastic table and chairs that you see in the old pictures are cheap and easy to find and are a must in a retro style kitchen. As well as this, you can get kitchen cabinets and doors that will also have a very retro look. If you follow these simple guidelines you will have a retro kitchen before you know it and it will not cost the earth either.
