Kitchen Island

Buying a Kitchen Island

An excellent way to give yourself more countertop and storage space is by adding a kitchen island or cart to your home. With so many choices, you will find a kitchen island that works perfectly for you. Some offer drop-down leaves, which provide a compact island that can be expanded on an as-needed basis. Other times, a kitchen island gives you space for doing prep work with a butcher block top. However, you could choose from a number of materials to include granite, marble, natural stone, ceramic tile, stainless steel, and more.

The storage space that a kitchen island offers is probably one of the greatest benefits. Many times, a kitchen island will be designed with drawers, shelves, and cabinets. With this, you can store away unsightly items but still have them within easy reach. Then, you might find a kitchen island with spindled legs, making it look more like a new piece of furniture or one with casters, making it easy to roll it from one location to another if needed.

To determine if a kitchen island would be a good addition to your kitchen, consider a few things. First, is your kitchen large enough to accommodate a kitchen island and if so, what size would work best. How much storage do you need, would a kitchen island with one drawer and cabinet be enough or do you need more space. Do you want to use your kitchen island as a workstation where you can cut foods and make dinner or do you simply want more countertop space to display decorative bowls and bottles?

When determining size, keep in mind that you would need to allow between 36 to 42 inches between the regular kitchen cabinets, appliances, and the kitchen island. The good news is that while kitchen islands were at one-time large, today you will find a variety of sizes. Of course, then you have wonderful choices in design as well. For instance, you might choose a kitchen island that has ornate carvings, a granite countertop, and beautiful hardware for a traditional style kitchen whereas for a modern kitchen, a kitchen island made from stainless steel would be beautiful.

Many families will use a kitchen island for space where the children can eat breakfast in the morning or do homework in the afternoon. Then, you have the type of kitchen island that is quite elaborate to include a sink, built-in cook top, and all types of extra features. While these types of kitchen islands work great, they are generally larger than the kitchen island you would buy from your local home improvement or furniture store. Even so, no matter what type of kitchen island you choose, you will be amazed at how much more you enjoy spending time in an uncluttered kitchen.
