Kitchen Island Ideas and Layouts

When you are deciding on the layout of your kitchen you may decide that you want to install an island. Kitchen island ideas are becoming more and more common and as the average kitchen size continues to increase, people are really beginning to realize the benefits and convenience of having a kitchen island. However, if you are going to make the best use of the space available to you in your kitchen, then you are going to need a few kitchen island ideas to help you figure out the best layout.

There are a few basic rules to kitchen layouts that most people tend to follow. Generally you will want your sink to be fairly central in the kitchen. While the positioning if your sink will depend to an extent on your plumbing, you will usually want to place your kitchen sink centrally. Some kitchen island ideas include putting the sink in the island but this is a less common layout. With your sink located centrally, you will generally have the dishwasher, and waste disposal near to it or under it. Then the only other basic rule is that your refrigerator will be to one side of the sink, and your stove will be to the other side.

There are some kitchen island ideas that place the stove in the island but there are a number of factors to consider before you do this. The first is whether or not your island is large enough. You need a pretty big kitchen, and quiet a substantial island if this kitchen island idea is going to work out. Then you need to consider fuel or power. If your stove is gas powered, you need to know if there is access to a gas outlet at the island, and if it is electric then you need a power outlet. You also need to consider ventilation and whether or not it would be practical to put a fan or extractor over the island.

There are a number of kitchen island ideas that involve getting the best use out of kitchen islands. For example, did you know that if your kitchen island is too large, you will be less likely to use it? Very large kitchen islands do not allow you to get access to the middle, and this is just a waste of space. Smaller islands can have a nice bar feel to them which people enjoy for eating breakfast or drinking coffee.

Other kitchen island ideas involve using the island effectively for storage. You can get a lot of extra storage space by putting cabinets under your island and this is great if you are finding that storage getting a bit tight in your kitchen.
