Useful Kitchen Islands

Are you limited with kitchen countertop space or storage – then you might consider looking at kitchen islands, which provide both. Keep in mind that even if your kitchen is smaller, you can find wonderful choices of kitchen islands from small to large. In addition to the extra space, kitchen islands add a sense of charm. In fact, if you purchase a larger unit, you can add a few bar stools and make extra seating in the kitchen for breakfast or homework.

Kitchen islands fall within two categories – permanent and mobile. The permanent islands are built-in, providing you with additional cabinet space, countertop space, and in many cases, an extra sink for cooking prep work. However, you could also choose a mobile island, which would simply be more like a piece of furniture that should you ever move, could be taken with you. In either case, kitchen islands provide tremendous value and benefit.

For people who spend time in the kitchen, having room to spread out when preparing food is vital. This means you have more room but that your time in the kitchen is also far more enjoyable. When placed in the center of the room, kitchen islands make reaching between the sink, stove, and refrigerator far more convenient, which saves you time and effort. During the day, you could use the island as a place for displaying a beautiful bowl, fancy spice containers, or a plant. Then when needed, you simply clear off the countertop and you have plenty of room to make your favorite foods.

Keep in mind when building a new home that in general, kitchen islands work best in L, G, or U-shaped kitchens but that does not mean you cannot use an island with other layouts. The key with a small kitchen is to look at multifunctional kitchen islands. For instance, choosing from smaller kitchen islands, you could possible store it off to the side or use it in a dining room as extra furniture until needed. Unfortunately, super small kitchens typically do not work well with a kitchen island.

The style of kitchen islands will also be something important to consider. In this case, you can find some kitchen islands made with a butcher-block countertop, making cutting and dicing a breeze. Then, some have marble or granite, which is also a great surface, especially for hot dishes but some materials can scratch. Therefore, you will need to think about the type of surface that would work best for your cooking needs and then choose accordingly.

Kitchen islands also come with various designs for drawers and cabinets. You could choose a longer kitchen island with a center cabinet on the bottom, flanked by two shelves that could be used for decorative items or additional storage. Then a kitchen island with a drawer, makes reaching for utensils commonly used convenient. Just remember, kitchen islands also look great, bringing warmth and elegance to the room, making the kitchen an even more enjoyable place to be.
